Artist Thomas Leveritt filmed people’s faces with regular and ultraviolet light; the startling result reveals freckles and damage within layers of skin invisible to the naked eye. R.I.P., Robin Williams

Robin Williams, 63, died this morning of suspected suicide at his home  in Marin County, California, said police. “The Sheriff’s Office Coroner Division suspects the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia, but a comprehensive investigation must be completed before a final determination is made, said the county sheriff’s press release: On August 11, 2014, at approximately 11:55 am, Marin County Communications received a 9-1-1 telephone call reporting a male adult had been located unconscious and not breathing inside his residence in unincorporated Tiburon, CA. The Sheriff’s Office, as well as the Tiburon Fire Department and Southern Marin Fire Protection District

Brief Encounters – a new column

Facts and Opinions is pleased to announce a new column — our first in the Think/Arts section — by Brian Brennan. In Brief Encounters, Brennan recalls conversations he had with celebrities during his 15 years as a newspaper entertainment reporter, and incorporates fresh reporting. Brennan, an Irish journalist living in Canada, is a founding feature writer with Facts and Opinions, a contributor to Arts dispatches and the Loose Leaf salon.
