JOHN’S, NL – Happy World Ocean’s Day, from the North West Atlantic ocean where spring is marked by the arrival of icebergs, whales chasing food, and seabirds returning to their summer nests to lay eggs in the great bird colonies around Newfoundland and Labrador. A place where the ocean comes alive around World Oceans Day. So, how are the oceans and the creatures that live in them doing these days? Not great. While beautiful photos will fill your media feeds to mark this day in celebration, they do not show the reality
Canada Post post office in Wings Point, Gander Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador. Photo by Greg Locke. Canada Post employees are in a strike position as of Friday, May 23rd. They have opted to “work to rule” but a full strike or another lock-out by the company would halt all mail and parcel delivery across the country. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers, which represents 55,000 of the service’s employees, says if there is no progress on a new collective agreement, its members will walk off the job.
ST. JOHN’S, NEWFOUNDLAND – New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh election campaign dropped into St John’s, Newfoundland for a quick stop to make a healthcare announcement and support their local candidate Mary Shortall in the riding of St John’s East. The NDP has taken a significant hit in the polls by day 13 of the campaign as the Liberal Party scoops up polling number showing them with a six point lead and heading for a majority government. Singh is the last of the major federal party leaders to visit Canada’s far eastern province in a short election campaign after Liberal
By Greg Locke PETTY HARBOUR, Newfoundland – On a fish plant wharf in a small fishing village on the east coast of Newfoundland, a campaign stop by Conservative Party of Canada leader Pierre Poilievre went mostly unnoticed in the blur of national election campaign news coverage. But it was eventful in that the Conservative Party’s organization and attitude towards the news media was on full display. Party staffers ordered reporters and local residents around to the point where tempers flared. The day started with Poilievre landing in St John’s and giving a closed news conference in a nearby construction company
COLUMN: FREE RANGE When does freedom of expression and political opinion cross the line to Treason, an indictable offence under Canada’s Criminal Code with a prison sentence of 14 years to life? When a Canadian advises a foreign government on how it can sway Canadian voters to that foreign government’s benefit, is that treason? If the government in question is the United States – a former ally now waging economic war on Canada with the stated intent of taking over Canada – is that treason? My question is prompted by Alberta premier Danielle Smith’s interview with America’s Breitbart news, in

By Greg Locke. ST. JOHN’S, NL – The Newfoundland and Labrador fishing industry will get a double hit in the 2025 trade wars with the USA and China. They could put an end to the industry completely. The small Canadian province (economic wise) derives its income from fish, mining, oil and hydroelectricity. But fish is the reason Newfoundland exists. It was colonized for the purpose of exploiting cod fish, whales and seals 500 years ago by the English, French, Basque and Portuguese. In 1992 the cod fishery came to an end, was driven to extinction by over-fishing by corporate-owned factory
ST. JOHN’S, NL – On this day in 1965 the new Canadian Maple Leaf flag was raised over the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. As Canada was a colony of Great Britain the Dominion of Canada had, until this point, used versions of the British Union Jack. In 1960, Lester B. Pearson, then Leader of the Opposition, declared that he was determined to solve what he called “the flag problem.” To Pearson, this issue was critical to defining Canada as a unified, independent country. As the newly elected Prime Minister in 1963, Pearson promised to resolve the question
On The Border By Greg Locke North Portal, SK – With the 49th Parallel between my legs I straddled the Canada USA border. One foot in Portal, North Dakota and the other in North Portal, Saskatchewan. ….and all that happened was someone asked if I wanted play a round of cross-border golf. It was 2007, and I was crossing Canada for Canadian Business magazine. The assignment: drive across Canada from Vancouver to Halifax along the Canada – USA border, searching for the stories of people, towns and businesses that span the “world’s longest undefended border,” as the saying goes. The
